STart KURUMI Bag

STart KURUMI Bag
The Kurumi Bag by Japanese artist ''STart ''is an avant-garde leather piece that transforms functionality into sculptural art. Inspired by the soft geometric forms of traditional Japanese paper balloons (kami-fusen), its signature silhouette captures a rare sense of movement and organic volume.
Crafted from Japanese leather and entirely handmade in Japan, the design originated from a chance discovery during STart’s student years, when swollen leather created unexpected sculptural beauty while crafting metal conchos. This moment evolved into a lifelong exploration of tactile form and craftsmanship.
Using traditional wet-forming techniques, leather is hand-molded over wooden blocks to create seamless three-dimensional curves. Early versions were entirely hand-stitched, reflecting the Japanese philosophy of Isshin-Nyukon—infusing one’s soul into every stitch.
Officially design-registered and recognized at the prestigious Osaka Craft Exhibition, the Kurumi Bag stands today as a contemporary art piece that quietly bridges heritage craftsmanship and modern luxury.
